Members' Spring Conference 2007
The 2007 Conference was dedicated to helping volunteers and staff optimise the opportunities for knowledge sharing in the year ahead.

Day 1: Saturday, 28 April
1. Welcome and scene setting

A series of events case studies:
- Expanding TPN activities in the Regions – Control & Automation events around the UK by Laurie Reynolds and Paul McKenna
- Working in partnership with outside agencies – IET and the British Association in Singapore by Chris Turner and Barrie Ross-Dow
- Harnessing the knowledge of experts gathered at international conferences – BETNET’s experience by Ben Pape
- Rotating conferences to different locations – the Med Power conference in the Eastern Mediterranean by Gady Golan
- Linking university research departments around the world – the power of IET.tv introduced by Kim Letchford, with a DVD from Dr John Slater of the University of Leeds
6. Training for success.
Pre-booked sessions provided for member volunteers:
- Delivering a high performance TPN (for TPN Chairmen)
- Planning and Budgeting for the Local Networks (for LN Honorary Officers)
- Taking events abroad (for active volunteers working in a global context)
- Effective web site maintenance (for Local Network Webmasters)
- Utilising the Technical Advisory Panel (for TPN volunteers)
- Understanding new professional registration processes (for volunteers across the Networks)
7. Planning for 2007/08 - Discussion theme tables, Key event session, covering technical sectors, Younger Member needs, Professional Registration, Mentoring, Business Partners.

9. The Conference Dinner and Knowledge Network Awards:
- Knowledge Network Award for TPN Activities, presented to Dr Hani Hagras representing the Robotics and Mechatronics TPN, producers of the IET International Conference on Intelligent Environments
- Knowledge Network Award for Local Network Activities, presented to Mr Xen Christodoulou representing the Central London Network, who have revitalised their events programme in recent years
- Knowledge Network Individual Achievement Award (TPN), presented to Mr Clive Kessell for his key role in the Railway TPN and the development of the Railway Engineers Forum
- Knowledge Network Individual Achievement Award (LN), presented to Mr John Jones for his outstanding contribution to raising the profile of the IET and of engineering in South Wales, in particular with young people and parents
- Knowledge Network Award for Joint Network Co-operation, presented to Dr Ong, Chairman of IET Singapore and Ms Tanya Vladimirova of the MES TPN in recognition of the success of the UK-Singapore Microelectronics & Embedded Systems Workshop (MES 2007)
- IET Mentoring Service Award, presented to Mr John Lorriman for his longstanding commitment to Mentoring and to raising the standards of Mentor training
The guest speaker was David Gurteen, founder of the Gurteen Knowledge Community, which seeks to help people to share knowledge, learn from each other, innovate and work together to make a difference.
Day 2 – Sunday, 29 April
10. Key development issues for the IET:
- New IET web site: demonstration of new search facility, IET Discover, and of new web page structure and layouts, by Nick Slowe and Ian Nicholson
- IET.tv: demonstration of capabilities for knowledge sharing by key stakeholders including member volunteers, by Christophe Gobel, Kim Letchford and Janet Tomlinson
- Raising the IET profile – brainstorming with Richard Cherry and Graham Paterson
11. A global case study completed the formal Agenda:
Developing knowledge sharing opportunities in China, by Mr Hai-Bin Wan
12.The Conference round-up was led by IET Chief Executive and Secretary, Robin McGill
