Statements against criteria
How to present your statements against criteria
The statements against criteria section of the form asks you to give evidence from your work against the 16 generic competences for CEng or IEng, or the 13 generic competences for EngTech. The assessors will be looking for strong, clearly written examples, which show you have really understood the competence statements.
The generic competences can be seen as two distinct groups: A & B (technical) and C,D&E (professional skills and abilities). Wherever possible, you are advised to give two concise examples against each statement to show you have demonstrated this generic competence over a period of time rather than just once.
Generic competences A & B
In these sections the assessors will be looking for strong evidence of your engineering skills and application so remember to:
- focus on technical matters not project or contact management
- use engineering language
- cite technical papers or patents you have written or presented
- give good quality examples rather than many poor quality examples.
Generic competences C, D & E
In these sections the assessors will be examining your ability to act professionally and your commitment to the profession so remember to:
- focus on management: technical and commercial
- demonstrate you can communicate at all levels (communicating the information on your application form clearly is a part of this competence!)
- demonstrate your commitment to safety
- show your awareness of appropriate environmental considerations
- outline your commitment to continuing professional development.
